The Flugel Horn is known for its darker, mellower sound often described as bridging the gap between the trumpet and french horn and used in brass bands to fill in between the sounds of a cornet and tenor horn.

In general terms, when a brass instrument has a conical bore, its tone is warmer with fewer upper harmonics. The Trumpet is roughly 2/3 cylindrical and 1/3 conical; the Cornet is roughly 1/2 cylindrical and 1/2 conical, and the Flugel Horn is roughly 1/3 cylindrical and 2/3 conical.
