The double bass is the largest of the string family, and it is so large that players have to sit on a high stool or stand in order to play it, but the sound is produced in the same way as the violin, viola and cello.
It lives up to its name too; the notes produced by the double bass are an octave lower than written. As well as providing the foundation for orchestral music within an orchestra, the double bass is a well-established instrument in jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, and rock and roll music.
