The violin is the smallest and highest pitched member of the string family.
The standard way of holding the violin is with the left side of the jaw resting on the chinrest of the violin, and supported by the left shoulder, often assisted by a shoulder rest.
The player’s left hand holds the neck of the violin and presses down on the strings to change the pitch, while the right hand moves the bow or plucks the strings.
The violins in an orchestra are split into 1st and 2nd violins; 1st violins play melody, while 2nd violins alternate between melody and harmony.
